In the past few years of bulding websites, I have definitely gone the long “scenic” route in learning. I started building websites by using just HTML, and like we’ve already covered that really was a pain in the butt.

It took forever to come up with the design of the website, and then every page had to be edited in special software, and many many other roadblocks came up all the time.

But, in the past year I have found the easiest, and most professional way to build great websites in no time flat!

This little secret is to use Wordpress. Now, I know most of you are probably saying, “Isn’t wordpress for blogging??”

And you would be right in saying so. But what  you don’t know is that in the past couple of years Wordpress has become mainstream as a tool to build more professional websites.

Below you will find a complete tutorial on how to easily and quickly get your website set up with Wordpress.

Do You Know Why Your Website Sucks?

by Eric on April 9, 2009

I remember when I started my first website. I created a landing page giving away a free home business training course.

I figured this was killer, and I knew that if I got a little bit of traffic I would blow this website up.

Sadly, I was very mistaken. I quickly learned that my website sucked. Matter of fact, it more than sucked. It was like the smelly poop on the bottom of people’s shoes :(

The worst part is that I didn’t know why. I didn’t know what exactly was killing the conversions on my website, and making people leave quicker than lightning.

Do Not Make The Same Mistake!

Well, now the tables have turned. There are tons of tracking scripts out there that will track everything from:

  • How long a person was on your website
  • Where the person was referred from (good to know which marketing works)
  • How many pages the visitor looked at
  • If the visitor bought anything, and if so how much money did it make you
  • The traffic sources that make you money
  • and MUCH MUCH MORE!

Now that I have a completely different perspective I can honestly tell you that if you are willing to put a little work in, you can make your website a winner. All it takes is continually testing to give your visitors what they want.

If you can increase the amount of time your visitors are on your website, then you can increase the amount of affiliate commissions you will make. Nice little formula there, huh? :)

So, How In The Heck Do You Do This?

The CSS Beast Can Be Tamed

by Eric on April 8, 2009

When you begin building websites you will find that there are for the most part 3 ways to build your website.

  1. HTML - This is where you will use HTML for all of the design aspects of the web page. This usually involves using tables and a lot of deprecated (phased out) tags.
  2. Flash - This is where you build a flash file (best known for movies like Youtube) and house a whole website inside this file. This is really useful if you are going to do a lot of graphic animation, but for SEO purposes it really sucks.
  3. CSS Styling - This is arguably the best way to build your websites. It keeps your HTML files clean, and with good markup, and it leaves all of the styling in the CSS. This is good because it has some great SEO benefits, and also because you can make site wide changes without having to touch each page of your website.

Many people start out with just regular HTML, and this is good because it will allow you to get a understanding of how web programming works. This works when you are building things such as landing pages, and basic web pages. But what about when you are trying to build a large website with tons of pages?

The next step up from this is incorporating CSS into your HTML. This is the beginning steps of using CSS but again, if you want to change the style of your website at a later point then you will have to go to each page of your website and make changes. YUCK!

The last step of CSS is using external style sheets. This is where you have one CSS file that is imported into the web pages through the header. If you look at the source code of this web page, near the top you will see link rel=’stylesheet’.

This is where I am importing style sheets for various elements into my theme. The true power of using CSS in this form is that you can easily make changes to your whole site in a JIFFY!

I can change one line of code in my CSS sheet, and instantly change the background of a 5,000 page website in just 20 seconds!

Cheap Web Hosting For Just $0.01?

by Eric on April 6, 2009

For some people, starting a website is one heck of a scary process. They picture HTML coding as the Devil’s child, and swear that they’ll never learn it.

For others, building a website may be out of reach because they think it’s super duper expensive.

Before I dived into the world of web design, I had a lot of the same worries. I thought that web hosts would charge me upwards of $50 a month to have a website online. I also thought that I would be coding with 1’s and 0’s!

Let me tell you though, your worries about building a website (no matter for what use), because we can now solve both of those problems.

First of all, building amazing websites is no big deal, especially when you learn to use the Wordpress platform. This is the main platform that we will teach you to use here at Heroic Web Design.

Wordpress is a god send because:

  1. It has a huge community of avid users that have built thousands of plugins and widgets so that you won’t have to do any coding in order to add rock star functionality to your website.
  2. It has a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor that will allow you to create and edit your website in much the same way that you would create a microsoft document.
  3. At any time your whole website look can be change without having to go page by page and work yourself to death.
  4. and MUCH MORE!

EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THOUGH, you can now get started with your own website for just $0.01 (one penny)!

That’s right… At Heroic Web Design we have the tools to show you how to get your web host for just $0.01, and we can also teach you how to build your very own professional site at next to nothing!

What if you could build your own site and literally save $1,000’s on web design services?

What if you could easily edit your website and cut out the $50-1,000 a month in webmaster fees?

What if you could easily have your own website up in as little as a week? [click to continue…]
